Painters in The Glebe

Century brick homes, doubles and infill in one of Ottawa's oldest residential neighbourhoods, where plaster, original trim and tight lots set the terms.

Paint Experts provides professional house painting throughout The Glebe, Ottawa. The Glebe was largely built before the Second World War and much of its housing stock is older than that, which means plaster walls, original woodwork worth keeping, and exterior conditions that a subdivision crew will get wrong on the first day.

Plaster walls and lath, not drywall

Plaster over lath behaves nothing like drywall. It cracks along stress lines rather than at seams, it can be sound but detached from the lath behind it, and it does not take a lightweight filler — the repair moves independently of the wall and reopens within a season. We use setting compounds, we re-key or re-anchor loose sections before filling, and we tape the structural cracks that will otherwise be back next winter.

Original woodwork worth restoring rather than replacing

Glebe houses frequently retain original baseboards, casings, picture rails and stair components with profiles nobody mills anymore. Those are restoration work, not replacement work. Sanding to a key, filling a century of dents and fastener holes, and finishing in a modern waterborne enamel keeps the profile and gets a better result than any stock replacement, at a fraction of the cost of having it reproduced.

Lead-era coatings and safe surface preparation

Any Ottawa house painted before the late 1970s may carry lead-based coatings in its older layers. That is not a reason to avoid the work, but it is a reason not to dry-sand it in an occupied house. We use wet methods and contained sanding on pre-1980 substrates, keep dust out of the rest of the house, and clean to a wipe-down standard rather than a sweep.

Semi-detached party walls and shared front elevations

The Glebe has a lot of doubles and semis, where your front elevation is visually half of somebody else's. Colour choice on a shared facade is a conversation worth having with your neighbour before the quote rather than after the first coat. Practically, party-wall properties also mean no side access, so material and equipment routes have to be planned through the house.

Tight lots, street parking and working in the Glebe

Narrow lots, on-street parking and limited setback are the working reality here. We plan parking and material staging as part of the quote, keep the sidewalk clear, and schedule exterior work to avoid the days a street is already congested. It sounds like a small thing and it is the difference between a neighbourhood job that goes smoothly and one that irritates everyone on the block.

Common questions

How much does it cost to paint a Glebe house?

The interior ranges apply — $400 to $700 per room walls-only, $4,500 to $8,500 for a three-bedroom — but older houses with plaster repair and original trim sit toward the upper end because the preparation is greater.

Do you work on plaster?

Yes, and it needs a different approach from drywall. Setting compound rather than lightweight filler, loose sections re-anchored before filling, and structural cracks taped rather than refilled.

My house probably has lead paint. Can you still work on it?

Yes. On pre-1980 substrates we use wet methods and contained sanding rather than dry-sanding, and clean to a wipe-down standard afterwards.

Should I match my neighbour's half of the facade?

It is worth a conversation before the quote rather than after the first coat. On a double, your front elevation and theirs read as one building from the street.
