Identifying what your builder actually installed

The kitchens that came with Barrhaven houses fall into a few families: melamine boxes with MDF slab or shaker doors, thermofoil doors on particleboard, and on the upper packages, real maple or birch. That distinction decides everything. MDF and solid wood take a sprayed enamel beautifully. Thermofoil is a heat-fused vinyl skin and cannot simply be painted — it has to be assessed, and where the film is lifting at a corner or edge it needs replacing rather than coating.

MDF is the easiest cabinet substrate there is to finish well, because it has no grain to telegraph and no movement to open a joint. The one thing it will not tolerate is moisture at a cut edge, so any swelling at the bottom of a sink-base door has to be cut back and sealed before priming rather than filled and painted over. Once primed and sprayed, an MDF door holds a finish that reads as factory.

Colour changes that suit a newer floor plan

Barrhaven kitchens usually sit in an open-plan space, which means the cabinet colour is visible from the family room and the dining area at the same time. That argues against treating the kitchen as a separate colour decision. Two-tone layouts, with a darker island or lower run and a lighter perimeter, work particularly well in these floor plans because they give the open space some structure without closing it in.

Doors leave for our shop and the kitchen stays functional the whole time they are gone — the sink, the fridge and the range keep working, and you keep using the cupboards with the doors off. Frames are sprayed in place with the room fully masked and filtered, which is the only genuinely disruptive part and it runs a day or two, not a week.
