Textured and stippled ceilings, and what to do with them

Textured ceilings are close to universal in Nepean houses of this era and you have three options: leave them, repaint them, or remove them. Repainting texture is straightforward but takes considerably more material than a flat ceiling because the surface area is larger than it looks. Removal converts the room completely, and on any pre-1990 house it starts with an asbestos test at an accredited lab before anything is disturbed.

Colour consultation when the fixed elements cannot change

Most Nepean interiors we repaint are keeping their flooring, their counters and often their tile, which means the colour has to work against elements nobody chose recently. That is a narrower problem than a blank slate and an easier one to get wrong. We work from the fixed elements outward, sampling on the wall beside them rather than choosing a colour first and hoping the room agrees.

Getting an even finish over a patchy repaint history

Walls that have been touched up repeatedly are a patchwork of different sheens and different ages, and a single finish coat over that will flash — the patches show through as duller or shinier areas once the light hits them. Where a wall has a heavy touch-up history we prime the full surface rather than spot-priming, which costs a coat and is the only thing that produces a genuinely uniform result.

Dust control and daily cleanup in an occupied house

Sanding old coatings makes more dust than sanding new ones, so containment matters more here. The room in progress is sealed at the doorway, sanding runs through vacuum extraction, and the working route is protected rather than just the room. Every room is put back and cleaned at the end of each day rather than left mid-job over a weekend.
